Thank You for Saving Josie
Today we received a very special delivery.
Josie and her seven three-week-old puppies - four boys and three girls - were brought to us by a group of volunteers this afternoon.
Josie is a very good mother, and her puppies are as cute as they can be. We'll keep them safe and comfortable here, provide food, blankets, and medical care, including deworming and vaccinations, and find forever homes for each of them.
But Josie and her puppies almost didn't make it. They came from an animal shelter in Missouri and were scheduled to be euthanized because one of the puppies has ringworm. Ringworm is entirely treatable and a relatively minor issue, but this one little problem was going to mean a death sentence for eight dogs!
Most animal shelters across the country are faced with decisions like this because they have too little space and too many animals. If an animal has any medical issues at all (or, as in this case, a littermate has a condition), it is euthanized to create more space for other healthier animals. Sometimes an animal is too old. Sometimes it has a questionable behavior report from previous owners who may or may not have taken the time to get to know their pet. And sometimes they're just the wrong breed or color. If it weren't for no-kill shelters like ours and volunteers, thousands more animals would be euthanized each year.
We appreciate the support we receive from people like you. Without you, we couldn't make the difference that we do. Each time you tell a friend about our shelter, volunteer, donate a blanket, food or supplies, adopt a pet or donate money, you are helping us to save another animal. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Western Plains Animal Refuge Volunteers
