Ay, Chihuahua!

Chihuahua adoption Kansas
This morning we have eight new temporary residents here at Western Plains Animal Refuge. Hays Animal Control confiscated 12 Chihuahuas from a home and brought most of them to us. Their previous owner was a hoarder - they were never let outside, and the house, as you can imagine, was a smelly, unhealthy mess.

People who hoard animals, sometimes called pet collectors, often think they're taking good care of them. Their intentions are good, but misguided.

Tufts University has a really informative website about this problem. Here's a link: www.tufts.edu/vet/cfa/hoarding/hoardqa_dt.htm

We
have begun spaying and neutering each of these dogs, and they are all available for adoption. We have posted only seven photos on our site (Click HERE to see) because Maria, one of the girls, was just spayed and didn't look her best when we were shooting photos. Come by and see them, though! We're working on socializing each of them, but they all have good personalities and will make excellent pets.

UPDATE: Today we found out that the Humane Society here was planning to euthanize the remaining four Chihuahuas, so we now have TWELVE available for adoption! Here's the scoop: blog.westernplainsanimalrefuge.org/2009/06/18/more-chihuahuas.aspx

Come
see them at Western Plains Animal Refuge, 3340 E. 27th, Hays, Kansas. You can also call us at 785-621-4222, or email us at westernplainsanimalrefuge@live.com!
